For the Cake:
- 1 box of German chocolate cake mix For a more authentic taste, stick to the German chocolate cake mix, but you can also substitute with a regular chocolate cake mix if needed.
- Ingredients as directed on the cake mix box This typically includes water, eggs, and oil—check the box for exact measurements.
For the Filling and Topping:
- 1 can 14 oz sweetened condensed milk – This creates the perfect creamy base for the coconut-pecan topping and helps the filling soak into the cake.
- 1 cup shredded sweetened coconut – The coconut adds a chewy texture and enhances the cake’s flavor with its natural sweetness.
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans – Pecans give the cake an extra crunch and complement the coconut filling perfectly. Walnuts are a suitable alternative if you’d rather use them.
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips – These melt beautifully into the cake making it even more decadent and giving that extra burst of chocolate in every bite.
Optional for Garnish:
- Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream – For an added layer of indulgence top your slice of cake with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Step 1: Prepare the Cake
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Prepare the cake mix according to the instructions on the box, adding in the required eggs, oil, and water.
Carefully pour the batter into the prepared pan and use a spatula to spread it evenly.
Step 2: Bake the Cake
Let the cake bake for about 30 to 35 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick—if it comes out clean, it’s ready.
After baking, take the cake out of the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. While it’s cooling, it’s time to prepare the filling.
Step 3: Poke the Cake
Gently poke numerous holes throughout the cooled cake using a fork or the handle of a wooden spoon. This allows the filling to soak into the cake for that signature gooey goodness.
Be gentle, but make sure you create enough space for the filling to seep into.
Step 4: Prepare the Filling
In a medium bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk, shredded coconut, and chopped pecans. Stir until everything is evenly mixed.
Pour the mixture over the cake, gently spreading it out to ensure it fills the holes you’ve made.
The coconut-pecan filling will sink into the cake, creating delicious pockets of flavor in every bite!
Step 5: Add the Chocolate Chips
Step 6: Cool and Serve
Give the cake time to cool completely so all the delicious flavors can come together. If you're in a rush, you can pop it in the fridge to speed up the cooling process.
Once cooled, you can optionally top with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence!
